Creature spawn commands only work if you’ve come across and loaded in the creature in the garden first. Once found then you can summon them. The best thing you can do to make it through Hollow Knight‘s impressive combat system is to find where every Mask Shard is. This will increase your overall HP in the game, giving you a better chance of survival. If you collect more mask shards, you can take more hits before you are completely taken down, which makes the game a lot easier. Not to mention, if you are taken down, you must take down your Shade before you can regain your Geo, which is never fun....
