In Pokémon Go, you’ll find that to get specific Pokémon, you’ll have to defeat the Team GO Rocket grunts and bosses. The leaders (Cliff, Arlo, Sierra, and Giovanni) are often the most difficult, but provide the greatest rewards. In this guide, we will focus on how to defeat Arlo and which counters are best against his new Pokémon.

Quick Notes

  • The counters we include aren’t synonymous with weaknesses. Sometimes these counters will be mentioned for things other than being the opponent’s weakness. Other examples may include their movesets or the fact that they’re naturally resistant to their opponent. These lists are not ranked from best to worst. While we can provide the best counters to use in any match, there is no guarantee which order they should fall. The effectiveness of each Pokémon largely depends on your play style and battle technique. This being the case, we have instead opted to list the counters alphabetically.Best team setup: There are a few Pokémon types that we recommend adding to your team, since they do well against many of the Pokémon in Arlo’s lineup. It’s best to have some combination of the team listed below. Still, if you only have two of them, you should hold fairly well against Arlo.Any Strong Fighting or Ice PokémonAny Strong Fire or Electric PokémonAny Strong Ice Pokémon

  • Any Strong Fighting or Ice PokémonAny Strong Fire or Electric PokémonAny Strong Ice Pokémon

  • Type: DragonWeak Against: Dragon, Fairy, IceResistant Against: Electric, Fire, Grass, WaterNotes: Dragons are weak against their own type, so it’s best to stick to Fairy or Ice Pokémon.

Blastoise

  • Type: WaterWeak Against: Electric, GrassResistant Against: Fire, Ice, Steel, WaterNotes: Blastoise is both weak against Grass attacks and ineffective against Grass Pokémon, so it’s usually better to use Grass Pokémon than Electric. Still, Grass isn’t a great option against the rest of Arlo’s lineup.

Charizard

  • Type: Fire, FlyingWeak Against: Electric, Rock, WaterResistant Against: Bug, Grass, Fairy, Fighting, Fire, Ground, SteelNotes: Both Fire and Flying are vulnerable against Rock, and Charizard doesn’t deal much damage to Rock Pokémon.

  • Type: Steel, GroundWeak Against: Fighting, Fire, Ground, WaterResistant Against: Poison, Electric, Rock, Bug, Dragon, Fairy, Flying, Normal, Psychic, SteelNotes: Steelix is vulnerable to Fire attacks, but its Ground attacks are strong against Fire Pokémon. It’s best to use Fighting, Ground, or Water against it.

Scizor

  • Type: Bug, SteelWeak Against: FireResistant Against: Grass, Poison, Bug, Dragon, Fairy, Ice, Normal, Psychic, SteelNotes: Scizor has one super effective weakness: Fire. It is resistant to most other types of attacks, so you want to make sure you have a Fire Pokémon in your lineup in case Arlo pulls Scizor out.
