For the Art of the Trickster Tall Tale, you have the option of pursuing one of the commendations in the Pirate Log. This Commendation is not required to complete the story.

Before we begin: If you were actually looking to solve some part of the main questline, you can find the links to those sections below!

We also have a few other important things to note about finding these Journals. The first and most important thing to mention is that you can only obtain while the Art of the Trickster Tall Tale is active. If you find them while it’s not active, it will not count towards the Commendation awarded for finding them. Secondly, you do not need to find these in order. Although the only way to find them without a guide is by using clues from the previous book, you can plan a faster route to collect them if you use this guide instead.

There is a straightforward way to understand this guide. Below, you’ll find that we’ve provided the five islands on which you’ll find these journals. You’ll also find images that lead you to their general location and the landmarks you’ll find them near. The list directly below is the entire list of islands where they’re located.

  • Discovery Ridge Plunder Valley Sailor’s Bounty

Unlike the other Tall Tales, all five Journals for this adventure are on three different islands. Sailor’s Bounty contains three of the Journals, all in the same room! The guide below lists the journals in chronological order.

Journal #1 - The Perfect Trap: Plunder Valley

You will likely stumble across the first Journal while searching for the Rum Bottle Spyglass since it’s in the same room! This Journal is in the cave of bones mentioned on the first few pages of the Quest Book. When you enter the central cave system, if you stick to the left, you will eventually find this room with the adjustable skeletons. The Journal is right in the center of the room on a short rock shelf.

Journal #2 - Bait and Switch: Discovery Ridge

If you happen to be looking for the Trapmaker Spots on Discovery Ridge, you might bump into this Journal. It is located near the top of the island on the Western side. Look on top of a barrel directly next to a Trapmaker Spot. It’s hard to miss it when you’re up there!

Journal #3 - We Want Plates: Sailor’s Bounty

This is one of the three Journals in the Trapmaker’s Room in the caves on Sailor’s Bounty. Directly across from the entrance to the room is an anvil next to a large lantern. The book is propped up against the base of this anvil.

Journal #4 - Making My Point: Sailor’s Bounty

This is one of the three Journals in the Trapmaker’s Room in the caves on Sailor’s Bounty. As soon as you enter the room, there will be two narrow tables to the right. The Journal is in between these two tables, propped up against one of the legs.

Journal #5 - A Worthy Opponent: Sailor’s Bounty

This is one of the three Journals in the Trapmaker’s Room in the caves on Sailor’s Bounty. In the back half of the room are a bunch of barrels full of supplies and a bed. The Journal is at the foot of the bed.

What’s Next

When you have found all the Journals, you’ll unlock Traps and Treasure Commendation! This is one of the seven Commendations you must achieve to truly complete the Art of the Trickster Tall Tale and obtain the Legendary Commendation. There are several Commendations awarded along the way as  you complete the main part of this Tall Tale for the first time. Besides those (and the one you just achieved), there is only one other Commendation you need to achieve, and it requires you to complete Art of the Trickster five times. Our guide covers all possibilities for what islands may hold the Tall Tale’s items, so feel free to go back to the start and use it again!
