HBO has released the official trailer for The Last of Us, giving us our best look at the TV adaptation of one of the most acclaimed video games of all time. We get a deep glimpse into the complex relationship between Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they travel across the apocalyptic US, which has been ravaged by a virus that turns humans into deadly mutants. We also get looks at familiar characters from the game series, new characters we’ve never seen before, and a terrifying look at a bloater, a being at the final infection stage that is dangerously difficult to defeat. While the show is an adaptation of the first game, released in 2013, the trailer for HBO’s The Last of Us makes a few references to the franchise. For example, we see Ellie taking pics with her friend Riley Abel (Storm Reid), who first met in the DLC The Last of Us: Left Behind. It was suggested in that Ellie had a romantic interest in Riley, who eventually succumbed to the infection. The trailer is also set to a somber version of A-Ha’s “Take On Me,” which Ellie plays an acoustic guitar cover of in the bestselling game The Last of Us: Part II.
But perhaps the biggest callback to the acclaimed game, though it is one you might miss, occurs when we see a woman holding a newborn baby. It is very likely that this is Ellie’s mom, and she is portrayed by Ashley Johnson, who voiced Ellie in the games.
