Who is Echo in Hawkeye?

Maya Lopez, AKA Echo, is a deaf Native American hero with the ability to copy another person’s fighting styles, movements, and even talents. Her powers are similar to the villainous Taskmaster, another character set to make his MCU debut soon. In the comics, she was also the first character to go by the name Ronin before passing it onto Clint Barton. In Avengers: Endgame, we saw Hawkeye operating under the Ronin mantle. Whether Echo picks up that mantle in this series, as opposed to being the first, is unknown.

Newcomer Alaqua Cox will make her on-screen debut as Echo in the Hawkeye Disney+ series. In addition to Cox and Jeremy Renner, the show will also star Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop, the second Hawkeye and Clint Barton’s protege. Other castmembers include Vera Farmiga as Kate’s mother and Florence Pugh, who will reprise her role as Yelena Belova from Black Widow.

The Echo series joins a long list of Marvel shows for Disney+. The first, WandaVision, debuted earlier this year to mass acclaim. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premiered its first episode on the 19th. Loki and What If…? will premiere this Summer while Hawkeye debuts in late 2021. Other Marvel Disney+ shows in development are Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, She-Hulk, Ironheart, Secret Invasion, Armor Wars, I Am Groot, an untitled Wakanda series, and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.
