While adventurous Halo fans have made and published their own Halo: MCC mods since the release of Halo: Reach on PC, the feature is still not officially supported by 343 Industries either on PC or consoles. Modders basically have to brute-force new textures, assets, and even gameplay overhauls into the game. Nevertheless, 343 has repeatedly said that official mod support is coming to Halo: MCC. And this month it might’ve made a breakthrough.
Since early this month, turns out 343 has started a beta test for Halo Custom Edition maps to be loaded into the PC release of Halo: MCC. And the team is currently hard at work expanding the mod support from other titles, notably Halo 2 Vista. Although there is progress on the PC front, 343 admits that they have no plans to bring mods to the console versions of Halo: MCC. At least for now.
With the release of Season 6, 343 also made a new End User License Agreement regarding Halo: MCC modding. The EULA opens with 343 saying that while selling mods isn’t allowed right now, the company is open to ideas on how to let modders profiting off of their works in the future. It also stated that only assets (music, texture, and models) that you’ve personally made it yourself, have explicit permission to use and share, and contained within MCC are allowed to be used for mods. Otherwise, it could get taken down and your account might get banned. Even using unreleased assets from beta tests could potentially “open yourself up to legal action.”
