For gamers, a lot of disappointing delays have come this year. ArenaNet added to that list by announcing the delay of Guild Wars 2 on Steam. The game was initially set to launch sometime in November 2020. Currently, it is put on hold to prioritize the development of the End of Dragons expansion.

Guild Wars 2 Steam Delay

ArenaNet writes:

They also added that they are working on delivering an “epic climax” to The Icebrood Saga and are looking forward to revealing the first trailer for The Icebrood Saga: Champions on November 5.

“We have been overwhelmed by the response [to the Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons expansion]. Delivering this next chapter in the Guild Wars universe is our highest priority.

With this in mind, we’ve made the decision to put the Guild Wars 2 Steam release on hold for the time being. Our number one priority right now is crafting [End of Dragons] with the high quality you expect and deserve.”

According to PC Gamer, the Steam release of Guild Wars 2 will not be compatible with existing accounts. Unfortunately, this means that long-time players will not be able to transfer their established account data to the Steam version.

MMO Games on Steam

In addition to Guild Wars 2, a couple of other big MMOs have also been released on Steam. Star Wars: The Old Republic made the transition earlier this year, while Runescape made their jump quite recently. Phantasy Star Online 2, a title that was Japan-exclusive for a while, was released on Steam this year as well.

With cross-platform games becoming more common, it will be interesting to see where MMO gaming on PC will go as we transition into the next generation of consoles.
