After much rumor swirling about on the internet for the last few months, Rockstar Games has officially announced the existence of the Grand Theft Auto PS2 trilogy remaster. Dubbed GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, the remaster will launch on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Rockstar Launcher with the iOS and Android versions to be released in the first half of 2022. However, with this announcement, existing versions of GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas all will be removed from digital storefronts starting next week on October 11.
Rockstar promises GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition will feature “across-the-board upgrades” including graphical improvements and modern gameplay enhancements for all three classic PS2 titles but still maintaining the classic “look and feel” of the originals. More details regarding the remaster will be revealed in the coming weeks.
What We Know of GTA Trilogy Remaster – Definitive Edition So Far
Speculations regarding remastering of GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas pretty much started around August this year. Speaking to Kotaku, anonymous sources claimed that Rockstar Games is working on the remaster using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine and it will sport new graphics alongside more modern UIs. Shortly after, TakeTwo started to chase down and sending cease and desist letters to a bunch of modders who worked on PS2 GTA-related projects such as re3 and reVC as well as GTA Underground. Three months later, now it is finally revealed that the developer is working on a remaster of those games.
