The rumor mill for the sixth installment in Rockstar’s GTA franchise has been heating up ever since some leaks started surfacing. With GTA 5 coming out nearly 10 years ago, fans are eagerly anticipating GTA 6.

There are always rumors about any upcoming game of this scale, and GTA 6 is no exception. Recent leaks pointed out how the upcoming game will have two playable protagonists, one of which will be female. But apparently, that was not Rockstar’s plan initially.

According to Axios’ source, GTA 6 was initially planned to contain three whole cities and four playable characters. One more than GTA 5’s infamous, and now iconic, trio.

The report goes on to share that Rockstar’s plans for GTA 6 might have been a bit too overzealous. Creating four protagonists with the same level of depth as all of the ones from the past and having deeply interlinking stories would have been too challenging for any studio.

But since none of this is confirmed, all this information should be taken with a grain of salt. It is entirely possible that these plans were only in the earlier stages of GTA 6‘s development. And the ambitious scale was soon reduced as development progressed.

Then What Will GTA 6 Be Like?

GTA 6 is rumored to have two playable characters and a setting similar to the Bonnie and Clyde criminal duo. Of course, the aforementioned duo will have the series’ first female playable character. Other leaks indicate that the game will contain Vice city as part of the total playable area.

The level of detail that GTA 6 aims for is further demonstrated by the fact that Rockstar has been working on the game “in some form” since 2014, reported Jason Schrier.

One of the main reasons it has taken this long has been the ambitious nature of the project. But also the internal restructuring Rockstar has been going through. The company commendably aims to eliminate crunch and toxic work culture entirely and is willing to delay major projects to do so.
