GreedFall, from developers Spiders, is due to release on September 10. An RPG set in a magically infused 17th century, the story follows the discovery of a remote island which offers a dying Old World hope in the face of an unstoppable plague. You make your way to this new island, known as Teer Fradee, on a quest to find a cure for the Malichor plague.
The game will boast a deep and vital diplomacy system, where often it will be better to solve your issues with words and wits instead of your sword. Teer Fradee is filled with different factions, all with their own beliefs, goals, territories, and histories with each other. It will be up to you to forge alliances when you need them and break them when you don’t. Each decision you make will have an impact on the factions, and your friends, so you need to think carefully about your long term plans.
GreedFall aims for a very unique visual identity, inspired by Baroque art from 17th Century Europe, depicting grandiose sceneries in muted warm colors and dark undertones. A grand journey filled with mystery follows, as you find yourself in the middle of ever-increasing tensions between the invading settlers and the locals, protected by supernatural beings, manifestation of the island’s earthly magic.
Spiders is a French development company known for games such as The Technomancer and Bound by Flame. Established in 2008, they have a long working relationship with Focus Home Interactive, who will also be publishing GreedFall.
I tend to enjoy Spiders’ games. While they lack the polish of Triple-A games, they consistently try to do exciting things with world-building and storytelling. I’ll be happily getting stuck into GreedFall on September 10, so keep an eye on the site for our upcoming review.
